I obtained a Start-Up Key for TotalTide but it expired before I installed the program – how can I obtain a Permanent Key?

The Start-Up Key can always be used to install TotalTide, even if the Key has expired. However, the Start-Up Key will not allow you to predict tides beyond its 1 month expiry date. You can obtain a Permanent Key at any time after installing TotalTide.

How do I obtain a Permanent Key?

From the TotalTide toolbar select File – Start-Up Key Wizard, this will allow you to request a Permanent Key. You must first select the Next box. This will take you to the TotalTide Start-Up Key Wizard – What Next? screen. Select the box marked I would like to obtain my Permanent Key by email, then select Next. Insert a Computer Name or choose a name from the drop-down list and select Next then select Finish.

This will generate an email which is addressed to keys@ukho.gov.uk. In the subject line there will be a string of letters and numbers beginning with UKHOPKR…… Do not amend any of this at all. Just click on the Send button. You will receive an email back with details of your Permanent Key.

To install the Permanent Key choose the option I have a Permanent Key and enter the key details. A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when typing Keys and Key Requests.

The PC on which I am going to run TotalTide does not have email facilities. How can I obtain my Permanent Key?

You can choose the option I would like to print my Permanent Key request or I would like to save my Permanent Key to a floppy disc. You can then manually type your Permanent Key request into the subject line of an email on another PC and send it to keys@ukho.gov.uk or copy and paste it from a floppy disc into the subject line of an email and send it. The Permanent Key will be returned to the email address that sent in the Permanent Key Request. Alternatively you can send the Permanent Key request details to your Distributor.

To install the Permanent Key choose the option I have a Permanent Key and enter the key details. Please note that if you type the Key manually, you must take care to enter the Key exactly as shown in order for the request to be successful.

How do I obtain my Permanent Key for my back up PC?

Load the latest version of TotalTide on your back up PC using the original Start-Up Key and generate a Permanent Key request from this machine, ensuring that a different computer name has been selected.

Note that if the Start-Up Key was issued for a previous version of TotalTide, when the program is run initially this will generate an error that the program cannot read Area Data Files 000x_0y (where “x” is the Version number and “y” is the Area number). This error should be ignored; the Permanent Key should be requested as shown above and installed. It will then be necessary to load the current Areas using the TotalTide toolbar and selecting View – Options – Areas.

If Area Data Sets from older versions of TotalTide are still licensed, it will be necessary to copy these Area Data Sets from the original CDs. These files can be dragged and dropped from the original CD (located in the AreaData folder) to the current program folder (default folder is C:\Program File\TotalTide).
It will then be necessary to load the Areas using the TotalTide toolbar and selecting View – Options – Areas.

My computer has been replaced/upgraded, how do I re-install TotalTide?

You will need to get your existing Permanent Key revoked at the UKHO before installing TotalTide on a replacement PC. Please contact support@thomasgunn.com explaining the situation and enclosing either your Start-Up Key, Permanent Key, Update Key or User Permit and Computer Name. When the original Key has been revoked, load the latest version of TotalTide on your replacement PC using the original Start-Up Key and generate a Permanent Key request from this machine.

Note that if the Start-Up Key was issued for a previous version of TotalTide, when the program is run initially this will generate an error that the program cannot read Area Data Files 000x_0y (where “x” is the Version number and “y” is the Area number). This error should be ignored, the Permanent Key should be requested as shown above and installed.

My TotalTide program was working fine but now it won’t work at all. I have a Permanent Key but I have a message saying my Key is invalid.

When you generate a Permanent Key Request this captures hardware details about the host PC which locks the Permanent Key to the PC. If you have made any changes to your hardware or changed your PC since the generation of your Permanent Key request, this will invalidate your Permanent Key. Please contact support@thomasgunn.com for assistance.

If you are running a MAIN and a BACK UP system, ensure that the correct key is used on the correct PC.

I am using TotalTide 2001/2002/2003 and want to upgrade to 2004. How do I do this?

You need to send us your User Permit number and we will arrange this for you. On either your MAIN or BACK UP system go to the TotalTide toolbar, select File – Update Key Wizard, select Purchase a key to enable more areas or to update existing areas and select Next to view. This displays your User Permit with the option to print or save to floppy disc. We will also need to know which Area Data Sets you require. We will send in a request for an Update Key for you, and you will receive a new CD ROM together with your Update Key(s). Note that separate keys will automatically be supplied for both the MAIN and the BACK UP systems. If only selected Areas have been updated then multiple keys for each system will be supplied.

To install the upgrade, insert the CD and select to un-install the previous version. When asked to insert the licence key, insert the new Update Key(s). A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when inserting Keys.

How much will it cost me to upgrade to the latest version?

The TotalTide CD ROM itself is gratis but you will have to pay £56 for each Area Data Set you update and £70 for each additional Area Data Set you wish to add.

How do I add extra Area Data Sets to my Licence?

You need send us your User Permit number and we will arrange this for you. On either your MAIN or BACK UP system go to the TotalTide toolbar, select File – Update Key Wizard, select Purchase a key to enable more areas or to update existing areas and select Next to view. This displays your User Permit with the option to print or save to a floppy disc. Advise which areas you wish to add and we will obtain an Update Key for you and provide you with this and (if applicable) a new CD ROM. Note that separate keys will be supplied for both the MAIN and the BACK UP systems. Each additional Area Data Set will cost £70.

To install the Update Key choose the option Add a key which you have just purchased and enter the key details. A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when inserting Keys.

I have lost access to my tidal information and cannot see any port or stream details.

Check that your Area Data files have been loaded. Go to the TotalTide toolbar and select View – Options – Areas. All areas you are licensed to use should be shown with a green tick. If there is a red cross against any of them, simply left-click on the area, select the green tick then select Apply. The licensed areas should then be loaded.

I have lost access to my tidal information – I have an error message 000x_0y.ttArea Not found (where “x” is the Version number and “y” is the Area number).

Check the folder C:\Program Files\TotalTide to see if the Area Data Sets are present. If they are missing they can be copied (dragged and dropped) from the original CD - they are located in the AreaData folder on the original CD. It will then be necessary to load the Areas using the TotalTide toolbar and selecting View – Options – Areas.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, create a Support Text, as shown below, and send to support@thomasgunn.com with a full description of your problem and they will advise further.

When I open TotalTide all I see is a blue screen with the port and stream symbols and no coastline.

This problem occurs with some users of pre-2004 TotalTide editions and is a Windows Installer problem. It happens when the end user opens multiple copies of the application in quick succession. To remedy this delete the folder that contains the world map
('c:\program files\common files\chersoft\worldmap' by default) and then run TotalTide. The application should detect that the World Map is missing and will reinstall just that component automatically. Alternatively the program can be uninstalled and reinstalled.

When I open TotalTide my search function on the Menu Bar is ‘greyed out’.

This problem occurs when the List View has been removed. To insert a new List View select Windows – New List from the TotalTide toolbar.

When I open TotalTide I cannot see a List View or a Filter View.

This problem occurs when these Views have been removed. To insert new Views select Windows – New List or New Filter from the TotalTide toolbar.

I wish to add more areas or upgrade, but cannot access the “Update - Key Wizard”.

Ensure that a Permanent Key has been requested and installed otherwise you will only be able to access the Start-Up Key Wizard.

If the Permanent Key has been installed the program may not have been closed since the Key was installed. Close the program and re-run it.
If this fails, create a Support Text, as shown below, and send to support@thomasgunn.com with a full description of your problem and they will advise further.

I wish to send Thomas Gunn a Support Text.

From the TotalTide toolbar select Help - About TotalTide - Support. You will be given a choice of: send an email; save in text file; print the message or copy the message to the clipboard. If possible select the first option. This will generate an email which gives a 'dump' of the registry settings. Forward the email to the UKHO Helpdesk – support@thomasgunn.com with a full description of your problem and they will advise further.
